The Supreme Court had on 19 April directed the Special Court to commence the proceedings of the matter within a month and deliver its verdict within two years.

On June 11 (Special CBI court trying the 1992 Babri masjid demolition case on recorded statements of two more accused, including BJP MP Lallu Singh, allowing them to elucidate away prosecution evidence against them over their roles in razing the structure. The second accused whose statement was recorded by the Special CBI Court (Ayodhya Prakaran), headed by Special Judge S K Yadav, was Kamlesh Tripathi.
The court had earlier summoned the duo for recording of their statements under section 313 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. Additional Sessions Judge Yadav had issued summonses to 6 more accused require their presence in the court on Friday for recording of their statements under section 313 of Code of Criminal Procedure,1973.

The accused in the decades old case include former Deputy Prime Minister LK Advani, former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Kalayan Singh and Bhartiya Janata Party leaders Murli Manohar Joshi, Umma Bharti and Sakshi Maharaj. Prosecution agency CBI led 350 witnesses and produced about 600 documents against the accused. The Hon’ble CBI Judge is likely to deliver his Judgement by the end of this month in compliance of the directions of the Hon’ble Apex Court.

The Babri Masjid was demolished in December 1992 by ‘karsevaks’ who claimed that the mosque in Ayodhya was built on the site of an ancient Ram Temple. The land dispute over the site was settled last year by the Supreme Court, which allowed the construction of Ram Mandir temple. The court also directed that the alternative site should be allotted in Ayodhya for the construction of a mosque. The ground breaking ceremony for the temple took place on August 5 with Prime Minister Narender Modi participating in a Bhumi Pujan.
