India and UK conclude fifth round of talks for India-UK Free Trade Agreement (AUG 11, 2022)

For this round of negotiations, technical experts from both sides came together for detailed draft treaty text discussions in 85 separate sessions covering 15 policy areas. 

Indian and UK officials will continue to work intensively throughout the summer towards our target to conclude the majority of talks on a comprehensive and balanced Free Trade Agreement by the end of October 2022.

National Intellectual Property Awareness Mission (NIPAM) achieves target of training 1 million students on Intellectual Property (IP) awareness (AUG 11, 2022)

NIPAM, a flagship program to impart IP awareness and basic training, was launched on 8 Dec 2021 as a part of “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav'' celebrations. 

The program is being implemented by Intellectual Property Office, the Office of Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks (CGPDTM), Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

SUPREME COURT 

Supreme Court says taxpayers have the right to question freebies doled out by political parties (AUG 1, 2022)

"Taxpayers may raise concerns about spending public money on developmental works, rather than handouts," the Supreme Court observed, adding that it could not take an ad-hoc decision on the topic as it needs to understand the implications on the economy.

The Central government said in the court on Thursday that political parties are using public money as freebies to gain power and said welfare schemes were different.

Google opposes Facebook-backed proposal for a self-regulatory body in India, say sources (AUG 11, 2022)

Google has grave reservations about developing a self-regulatory body for the social media sector in India to hear user complaints, though the proposal has support from Facebook and Twitter, sources with knowledge of the discussions told Reuters.

India in June proposed appointing a government panel to hear complaints from users about content moderation decisions but has also said it is open to the idea of a self-regulatory body if the industry is willing.

In addition to Facebook, Twitter and Google, representatives from Snap Inc and popular Indian social media platform ShareChat also attended the meeting.
