‘Woman is not a chattel and has an identity of her own’: Supreme Court strikes down arbitrary provision of Income Tax Act (JAN 13, 2023)

The Supreme Court struck down a discriminatory provision that excluded Sikkim women married to people from outside the state after April 2008 from exemption allowed under the Income Tax Act, 1961.

Extending the exemption under Section 10(26AAA) of the 1961 law even to persons of Indian origin residing in Sikkim as on April 26, 1975, when the state merged with India, the top court virtually extended the tax exemption net to almost 95% population in the northeastern state.

Android case: App Bazaar seeks impleadment in Google appeal before Supreme Court (JAN 13, 2023)

Ahead of the Supreme Court hearing on the Google Android matter on Monday, OSlabs Technology (India) Private Limited (OSlabs), a competing start-up that has built App Bazaar, India’s only indigenous mobile app store, has moved an application for impleadment. The impleadment application has been moved through Advocate Shardul S Shroff.

The start-up has turned the heat upon Google (by challenging its appeal) just days before the January 19 deadline set by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) for the tech giant to comply to its directions in the Android case nears.

Android case: NCLAT to further hear Micromax, Karbonn appeals on April 23 (JAN 13, 2023)

The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) on Friday set for April 23 the further hearing of appeals made by Micromax Informatics and Karbonn challenging a Competition Commission of India (CCI) order related to the Android platform matter.

At the hearing today, the NCLAT competition bench comprising Justice Rakesh Kumar, Member (Judicial) and Alok Srivastava, Member (Technical) also noted that both the appeals still have persisting effects that have not been removed.

Cryptocurrencies are equivalent to gambling: RBI Governor (JAN 13, 2022)

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das on Friday reiterated that crypto currencies are equivalent to gambling, as their perceived value is only make believe. Addressing a media event here, Das called for a ban on cryptos, saying there is no underlying value in it. Those supporting it call it an asset or a financial product, but there is no underlying value in it, he added.

To counter the growth of cryptocurrencies, the central bank recently launched in pilot mode, its own e-rupee or central bank digital currency (CBDC).
