Supreme Court Rejects Google’s Plea Against NCLAT Order, Directs It To Pay 10% Of Penalty Within 7 Days (JAN 19, 2023)

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) fined Google, Rs 1,337.76 crore for exploiting its dominant position in Android, which powers the majority of smartphones in the country, and asked it to change restrictions imposed on smartphone makers related to pre-installing apps.  

A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices PS Narasimha and J B Pardiwala granted the US firm seven days to deposit 10 percent of the penalty imposed by the CCI.

DELHI HIGH COURT 

Delhi High Court says 'Can’t bar child from taking exam mid-session due to fee non-payment (JAN 19, 2023)

The court’s observation came on a petition by a class 10 student of a private unaided school here whose name was struck off the roll due to non-payment of fees and who sought directions to be permitted to sit in the upcoming CBSE board examinations.

While taking a “compassionate and sympathetic view” of the plea, Justice Mini Pushkarna said not allowing a student to take examinations, especially board examinations will be an infringement of his rights akin to the right to life. She, therefore, directed that the student be allowed to take the board examinations.

SEBI 

Sebi investigates investments between Nippon Mutual Fund, Yes Bank: Report (JAN 19, 2023)

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) is probing whether investments by the fund, known at the time as Reliance Mutual Fund, in perpetual bonds of Yes Bank were made as part of a deal whereby in return the lender invested in securities of Anil Ambani group companies, said two sources with direct knowledge of the matter. Sebi's regulations say that the parent of a mutual fund cannot access investors' money either directly or indirectly.

BUSINESS NEWS 

Amazon sends warning notices to more than 2000 employees, likely to fire more people (JAN 19, 2023)

In accordance with its decision to fire around 18,000 employees, more Amazon employees are likely to lose their jobs soon. The company, as per a Reuters report, sent a fresh warning notice to 2,300 employees informing them about the layoffs.

According to US Labour Law, employees affected by mass layoffs in a company must be notified 60 days before it happens.
